Weld County’s early history was heavily focused on agriculture. Early community leaders were diligent in acquiring senior water rights to support widespread agricultural activity. To this day, Weld County ranks as one of the top ten agricultural producing counties in the United States—the only one of the ten that is not located in California.
While the water rights secured by early visionaries still support local agriculture, some portion of that water now places Weld County in a favorable competitive position for business development.
Over time, a diverse variety of employers has recognized the benefits of a Weld County location, including several companies with national and international credentials, including:
- Swift & Company
- Eastman Kodak
- Owens-Illinois
- State Farm Insurance
- RR Donnelley
Upstate Colorado Economic Development works to attract new employers to Weld County, and has identified the following industry targets for its attraction program:
- Energy, including fossil fuels and renewable energy
- Food processing
- Information Technology
- Manufacturing
- Business Services
